David rubbed his eyes and blew out a slow, torturous breath. Dealing with Emma was like approaching an unbroken horse or an abused dog. Skittish didnât begin to describe her. Thank God, sheâd gone to change. That wet T-shirt had accented every glorious inch of her beautiful breasts.
Although the glimpse had been brief, visions of Emma naked had plagued his dreams since the infamous snake incident a few weeks ago. Tonight, his resolve to build their relationship on more than a physical attraction had rapidly deteriorated. Was he that weak a man? Heâd wanted to throw her down on the couch and make love to her, which would have been a colossal mistake. Her relationship with their daughter was progressing better than he could have hoped. He could tell Emma loved being with Kenzie, and the feelings were reciprocated. Awkward at first, Emma now seemed more comfortable in her role of mother. And he found himself looking forward to her daily visits. Heâd been a bit jealous on more than one occasion when Kenzie received all her attention. Heâd found his interest in Emma to be more than her as the mother of his child.
Her confusion was his fault. But he needed time.
Time to get his raging need for her under control.
Time to make her understand he wasnât like the creeps she was used to.
Time to be sure having her back in Kenzieâs life was the right thing.
Time to make sure she wasnât going to ditch him and Kenzie and run again.
Time to make sure she was ready to accept love and be in a healthy, full-fledged relationship. He still wasnât sure how much her past had affected her. He didnât want to add to her trauma. Maybe he should seek counseling, too?
Plus, his own self-doubt permeated his thoughts. Jennifer had left him for Dylan. But it wasnât like he didnât know the mechanics of what to do. Sex was like putting together Kenzieâs dollhouse: tab A goes into slot B. He groaned, rubbing his eyes.
Iâm losing it, comparing sex to putting together toys. Really? Loser.
He stood and paced, running a hand through his hair. Deep down he was terrified Emma would recognize his lack of experience and find him deficient, which would be deflating, in more ways than one. He collapsed with a sigh onto the couch. Pathetic. It was the only word that applied.
He looked up when Emma strolled back in and perched on the chair facing him. She picked up her beer and closed her eyes to take a long drink. He watched her lips around the tall neck of the bottle.
Pathetic and horny.
Stop it, you jerk!
Shifting uncomfortably, he moved the embroidered pillow his mother had made onto his lap, covering his erection. Heâd hated that pillow until this moment.
Emma needs to go home before I humiliate myself like an adolescent teen.
No, I donât want her to go.
A crack of thunder shook the windows, reminding him that the storm still raged. He couldnât send her home in this weatherâit provided a viable excuse to keep her here anyway.
